By Michael Russell Education has come a long way since the dark ages. What we know today far surpasses what we knew even 50 years ago. We have bachelor degrees now that didn't even exist 30 years ago. We have professions that have blossomed and others that have pretty much died away. But in all of that, has the actual degree itself kept the same value that it had when our parents went to school? Some would say no. Back in the early 80s, if a student were to get a bachelor degree in just about any discipline at all, that student could have gotten an excellent job in computer science or some form of data processing. Math majors especially were given the best computer jobs. Today, computer science majors face long unemployment lines because of the tough competition. Those without a degree in computer science have no chance getting into the industry. The above example is just one that shows how a bachelor degree in any discipline isn't worth what it was 30 years ago. Back in the early 70s, if you were a college graduate you were pretty much assured of getting a good paying job, even if you decided to work for an insurance company or a bank. College graduates with a bachelor degree in just about anything were put in management training programs and usually moved into management within a year, or less. Today, that same graduate has a long line ahead of him. Not only are more people going to college and getting a bachelor degree, but they are going to finer schools because of the advances in getting financial aid. Affirmative Action has made it much easier for minorities to get a bachelor degree from a highly accredited institution. This increases competition even more, not just for jobs after college but for scholarships just to get into a college. Valedictorians are no longer guaranteed a full scholarship. As a result of the bachelor degree not having as much power as it did years ago, students are now being forced to continue their education and get masters degrees and maybe even PhD's. The bachelor degree of today is like the high school diploma of years ago. The effects that this has had on the world in general have been so widespread that it would be impossible to quantify all of them. But there are just a few of them. For one, since it is now harder to get entry level jobs, the pay for these jobs has actually decreased if you figure in inflation and cost of living increases. Entry level jobs aren't paying that much more than they did years ago, while the cost of living has skyrocketed. We're actually making less money today for our first job than we did 20 years ago. Another way this has effected things is that because a student has to further his education even more to get ahead, the average cost for an education has skyrocketed. Colleges know that a bachelor degree isn't a luxury anymore. It's something all kids need if they're going to have any chance for a future. So tuitions are now through the roof. The snowball effect of lower paying jobs and rising tuition costs affects everyone. People don't have as much money to spend so businesses don't make as much. So people have to be laid off, which causes more unemployment and more problems. The question probably shouldn't be if a bachelor degree is worth what it was. 2. Lawsuits for "negligent hiring" are on the rise. If an employees actions hurt someone, the employer may be liable. So when considering an applicant, it's in the company's best financial self-interest to find out if that person has done anything in the past which might indicate future problems.
3. Child abuse and abductions have resulted in new laws in almost every state that require criminal background checks for anyone who works with children.
4. The September 11th attacks have resulted in heightened security and identity-verification strategies by many employers.
5. In addition, many state and federal government jobs require a background check, and depending on the kind of job, may require an extensive investigation for a security clearance.
So there are several reasons why employers perform background checks.
Under federal law, the employer must obtain the applicants written authorization before the background check is conducted.
The types of background checks companies do usually depends on the job, but they typically include the following:
Employment Verification
Often a potential employer will contact an applicant's past employers. Many states have laws which prohibit employers from intentionally interfering with former employees' attempts to find jobs by giving out false or misleading references, but a former boss can say anything TRUTHFUL about your performance. However, most companies have a policy to only confirm dates of employment, final salary, and other limited information.
Education Verification
This is done to verify degrees and certifications listed on resumes or applications. Under federal law, specific records such as transcripts and discipline records are confidential and will not be released by schools without the authorization of the student. However, a school may release "directory information," which can include name, address, dates of attendance and degrees earned.
Drug Screening
Many large corporations have a policy to drug-screen all potential employees prior to starting. In this situation, the job offer is contingent on you successfully passing the drug screen.
Credit Checks
This type of check (sometimes called a "consumer report") is most often doneby companies where employees have access to money, sensitive personal and financial information. Some employers also use your credit history to gauge your level of responsibility (they believe if you are not reliable in paying your bills, then you will not be a reliable employee).
In addition to your payment history, a credit report typically includes information about your former addresses and previous employers. Employers can use this as one way to verify the accuracy of information you provideon an application or resume.
Federal law prohibits employers from discriminating against applicants because they have filed for bankruptcy.
Criminal and Motor Vehicle Records
These types of background checks are not as common but some companies have a policy of checking criminal records. Although arrest information is a matter of public record, in most states employers cannot normally access the arrest record of a potential employee (there are some exceptions, such as for law enforcement positions). If the arrest resulted in a conviction, that information can be obtained. In general, civil suits, civil judgments, and records of arrest more than seven years old are not reported (the seven-year limit may not apply to criminal convictions, depending on your state).
Companies check motor vehicle records when positions involve the operation of company vehicles and equipment. Employment Application Accuracy
Some companies verify the accuracy of the information you provided on the employment application, including what you listed as your most recent salary. When you complete the application make sure all information is accurate.
What Can You Do to Prepare?
Take the following steps to reduce the chances that you and/or the potential employer will be "surprised" by information found during the background check:
1. Order a copy of your credit report. If there is something you do not recognize or that you disagree with, dispute the information with the creditor and/or credit bureau before you have to explain it to the interviewer.
2.Check court records. If you have an arrest record or have been involved in court cases, go to the county wherethis took place and inspect the files. Make sure the information is correct and up to date.
3.Check DMV records. Request a copy of your driving record from the Department of Motor Vehicles, especially if you are applying for a job that involves driving.
4. Do your own background check. If you want to see what an employers background check might uncover, hire a company that specializes in such reports to conduct one for you. That way, you can discover if the data bases ofinformation vendors contain inaccurate information. Consult the Yellow Pages under "Investigators," or use one of the many online search services to find a service.
5.Ask if your former employer has a policy about the release of personnel and/or employment information. Most companies limit the amount of information they disclose.
Remember, potential employers can't conduct a background check without your written authorization. You can "just say no." Of course, doing that would give the impression that you have something to hide and almost certainly eliminate you from consideration.
Just be honest about your background. Many employers will hire good candidates that fit their needs even if their backgrounds are less than perfect -- as long as they didn't lie about it. How to Grow Garlic in Your Home Garden Successfully

By Joyce Moore Greetings fellow Gardeners! The following tutorial refers to garlic growing specifically, but can easily be used for most onion crops as well. The following information is for general garlic growing that I have used for my own home garden. Of course, there are lots of specialty seeds and plants that require more specific techniques but as I am not a professional horticulturist, but a home gardener like yourselves, I will stick with what I know! For basic garlic growing you need a few things. First of all your garlic cloves! We started out by growing garlic from garlic heads bought at the store, but then I decided to try some new and different varieties! Last year I ended up the with some German Reds left over after my fall selling on virtualseeds.com, so decided to plant them with the idea of offering them to my customers in 2001. This way, I could be assured of the freshest product possible and it allowed me to use the garden space normally left fallow all winter to good use. spring So, I planted in October and waited for spring. Remember to work in some good compost and bone meal before planting your cloves. I planted mine about three inches deep or about three times the size of the clove. We have fairly mild coastal winters so not a lot of hard ground freezing until around January and then it is only for a few weeks at most. More on this subject later in the tutorial....... Viola!
Come late spring, what to my wondering eyes to appear, but garlic sprouts! Let's back up a little to discuss the two basic types of garlics for the home gardener. Generally speaking we are talking about hardnecks and softnecks. HARDNECK GARLICS(See picture at top of page) are very popular because they are easy to grow in most types of soils as long as the soil is fertile and well draining. Hardnecks will store for three to six months on average so are grown for early winter usage. There are many different varieties from the German Reds that I offer my customers to Spanish Roja and more. As you can see from the titles, these garlics most often have some coloring to them such as streaks of purple, red or brown. They are valued for their high allicin content and great flavor that holds up to cooking. Hardnecks can be a little challenging when separating the cloves as they have a fair amount of "parchment" or the papery skins you have to peel away to get at the "meat". They tend to have a inner circle of large cloves with few to any smaller cloves on the outside. Hardnecks are planted in the late fall and harvested in early to mid summer. SOFTNECK GARLICS are the ones you see in the grocery store and in garlic braids. These are normally white such as the silverskins. The variety you see in the store most likely is "Colossal" or another generic variety. Stores and their customers want the whitest garlics. Flavor is good and can be from mild to very strong. The necks are more pliable than hardneck varieties so they make good candidates for braiding. Softneck garlics advantage is that they store longer, up to nine months. They generally have numerous cloves in a head. Softnecks also are planted in the fall with later harvesting in late summer. Do you have garlic in your refrigerator that has begun to sprout? Can they be used in cooking? Not likely as the cloves will feel "empty" as the plants have already used the stores to start the plants. Can the cloves be separated and planted? Sure, and garlics can be planted in the spring but generally don't do well as an annual crop. They are genetically meant to be planted in fall so they can establish roots, then they wait for spring to start growing in earnest. PLANTING: In most parts of the country, you want to plant your cloves about six weeks before your winter freezing weather sets in. This is to allow the cloves to send down roots and get established in the soil before hard freezing weather sets in. This keeps the garlics from being forced up and out of the soil during hard freezes and thaws. As you plant your cloves, be sure to add some good quality compost and a tablespoon of bonemeal to the bottom of the hole so the plants will have some excellent nutrition to draw upon. I plant mine about three times the size of the clove or around three inches below the surface. If you live in a colder climate with significant freezing, then do plant deeper to protect the cloves, and consider mulching, just like you do when you plant bulbs like tulips and daffodils. Water in the cloves and you are done till spring! OK, spring has arrived and you anxiously watch the plot for any sign of growth.........and there they are! Now is the time to fertilize with some nitrogen based fertilizer or compost as you can see in my picture at the top right of the page. We fertilized with a home made mix of compost, bonemeal, canola seed meal, dolomite lime, and potash. We also set up watering through soaker hoses so that we watered the plants, not the weeds. Weeding is crucial! Let me repeat...... weeding is crucial! The next most important chore you need to be vigilant about is weeding! Garlics do not want to compete with other vegetation! So semi-weekly weeding with a hoe is necessary. Do not dig down in the ground around the plants or you can tear up the developing bulbs. Just a light scratching of the soil is all you need to keep the weeds at bay. I use a "hula hoe" and love it! HARVESTING: By the first of July, I can see that my crop is getting ready to be harvested. How do I know? First of all, the weather has gotten hotter so I know that the bulbs are forming underground and secondly by observing the plants. Now the tops are starting to brown and die back, a sure sign that harvest time is near. So I stop watering about ten days to two weeks before harvesting. This is necessary so the plants can start to "hardened" the outside of the bulbs. Mid July is here and it's time to harvest. The plants have now browned to about 60-75 percent. I gently pull on the first plant and it comes up easily! Of course, mine are planted more shallow than most of you will do so the bulb is nearer the surface. Most gardeners will need to gently spade around the plant in order to get the bulb loosened and pulled up. CURING AND STORAGE: Now all that is left is to "cure" the bulbs and store for usage. Curing refers to allowing the bulbs to dry out in a warm but shaded area. Don't wash your plants but let the soil dry naturally, then brush off when you are ready to store or hang. I am drying mine on a pallet so that air can circulated around the plants. As you can see by the picture, garlics need to be dried in a single layer. Drying takes from two to three weeks depending on the weather or your choice of storage area. Some people will braided them and hang for curing. What is important is that the plants have good circulation of warm, dry air so that mold and mildew doesn't take hold. When your garlics are done curing, then clip off the top to about 1.5 inches from the bulb and you may snip back the roots. Garlics can be stored in a dark, dry, cool place such as a basement, storage room etc and used as needed. Check them periodically as some varieties do not store as long as others. Ideal storage temperatures would be in the 40's to 50's.
Don't forget to keep your biggest and best bulbs for this year's fall planting! Rotate your crops each year. Garlics are pretty much pest free but can pick up soil diseases which can devastate a crop. Thanks for reading my tutorial on garlic growing. To truly get at the heart of the matter though, you have to find and eliminate the cause of low back pain. I*ll let you in on a little secret. Most chronic low back pain can be resolved in six weeks or less. It*s true! A majority of chronic low back pain is caused by simple factors including: Poor Posture Injury Muscle Imbalances Improper Lifting Extra Weight Let*s take a look at each of these more closely. Poor Posture Posture is everything when it comes to back pain. Good posture results in stability and strength. Bad posture results in back pain. Many people can alleviate chronic back pain simply by taking the time to improve their posture. You probably can too! Injury We are all subject to injury at one time or another. You can work toward preventing injury in certain circumstances however. A lot of the injuries that result in low back pain are caused by improper lifting techniques. You may be lifting a heavy box, or you may be lifting a heavy weight without warming up adequately. Either way, if you injure yourself you are subject to back pain. What can you do to improve your chances for recovery? One of the best things you can do is exercise. You should incorporate stretching activities into your daily regimen. By doing so you will condition your back and are les likely to get injured, and more likely to recover faster when you do get injured. Muscle Imbalances Muscle Imbalances occur when two muscles that oppose each other are unequally matched. If you exercise your back regularly for example, but never exercise your stomach, you body will be in a state of imbalance. No matter how strong your back is in this situation, you are going to be subject to back pain. Eliminate the muscle imbalances through rehabilitation and proper exercise and you stand a good chance of eliminating back pain. Improper Lifting OK, go back and re-read the section on injury. You need to lift correctly in order to avoid injury. NEVER bend from the waist when picking something up off of the floor, even if it is a feather. Always bend from the knees, and use your leg and abdominal muscles to support you when lifting an object. Many improper lifting injuries actually occur in the gym. This happens when a person attempts to lift a weight that is too heavy or fails to warm up properly. You can avoid these injuries by paying close attention to technique at all times. Extra Weight Carrying around a few extra pounds may not seem like a big deal, but when it comes to back pain it could mean the difference between no back pain and chronic back pain. Even if you are carrying around just ten extra pounds, your body will have to shift and redistribute itself to accommodate the extra weight. Christmas Stocking Sock Monkeys

By S. Roberts Year after year does Santa Claus bring you socks? They might be a great gift for Santa in Lapland but on the whole they are a pretty unimaginative stocking filler. Well we have a fantastic idea to turn a boring old pair of socks into a cute, cheeky, little sock monkey. All you will need is... A pair of socks in any size, needle and thread, toy stuffing, 2 buttons for eyes and a sewing machine is an advantage but not essential Take the first sock, turn it inside out and lay it out flat heel up. Mark out the centre of the sock up to 4 cm below the heel line. With a dewing machine, if you have one, stitch 1 cm away from the centre line and sew down towards the ribbed part of the sock. Sew down to the bottom edge, turn away from the centre line and sew across the ribbed section to form a foot. Stitch the other side of the centre line to match. Now cut up the centre line to divide the legs. Turn the sock the right way out through the hole at the monkey's crotch. Lightly stuff the monkey's body and legs and sew up the hole in the crotch with invisible stitches. Lay the second sock out flat in a side profile position and cut out relevant parts as indicated in the diagram. Tail
Fold in half and stitch up the long side, tapering the ribbed edge to a point. Turn, stuff, turn the ends in and attach to the monkey's bottom. Mouth
